Mrs. Winslow, I served on a Yarp Patrol (YP) cruise with your daughter during second class summer ('93). She was an outstanding person and would have made an excellent officer. She had guts. Our small fleet of YPs, which are yacht-sized training vessels, set out from USNA in August and we made port in Boston and Newport, R.I. On our way to Boston (less than a week after getting underway from Annapolis) we ran into heavy seas, and half of the crew became seasick. At one point we were regularly doing 30-35 degree rolls. The other half of the crew had to take on double duty in order for the ship to function. Lisa was one of the people able to carry on duty. I remember her crawling along the topside deck, clinging to the whatever handhold she could find along the bulkhead (wall). She did that in order to fulfill a minor errand which I cannot remember. She could easily have been swept away by waves or lost her grip, since the ship was pitching nearly horizontal with the water. I was impressed by what she did (I don't think anyone else saw her do it). Also, I never heard Lisa ever complain about anything. She always fulfilled her duty, whatever it was. I recognize now that she truly had character. I think she would have made a better officer than some men I know, including myself. I sympathize with your tragic loss.
